The Executive Director Position

About the Organization

Founded in 2004, WPTI is a nonprofit organization focused on improving the day-to-day operations of workforce development programs and strengthening the workforce development field. WPTI provides professional development and training opportunities for program staff and managers and technical assistance and consulting services to organizations and local workforce systems. As a result, WPTI builds the skills and capacity of practitioners to help thousands of low-income and disadvantaged jobseekers achieve economic independence by improving organizational capacity and performance. Over the past seven years, WPTI has trained more than 4,000 practitioners in 300 organizations in the New York City metro area as well as organizations in Florida, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California and Washington, DC. WPTI clients include local community-based organizations and nonprofits, for-profits and government agencies that provide services to hard-to-serve jobseekers. WPTI enjoys a strong reputation for high quality programming and resources, including our own publications, that influence the bottom-line performance of organizations while also building a network for peer-to-peer learning and support among workforce development professionals.

The Executive Director Position

The Executive Director reports to the WPTI Board of Directors, which is small but active, engaged and agile. WPTI’s Board is made up of eight members representing a diverse group of leaders form the corporate and non-profit sectors. The Board monitors the performance of the ED and is in regular communication. The Executive Director oversees the organization, represents WPTI to its partners and the public, and supports the staff in setting and achieving the WPTI’s mission and business goals.

The successful candidate for this position will be a visionary leader experienced in marshaling change and building consensus among diverse constituencies. Demonstrating strong public relations and public speaking abilities, the ideal candidate will also have excellent written and verbal skills to communicate his or her vision as it relates to the mission of WPTI. The desirable candidate will be a team builder with proven ability to effectively staff and manage the operation while creating networks and partnerships with related organizations. WPTI has recently retained a consultant to lead the Board and organization through a strategic planning process. The Executive Director should be prepared to actively participate and guide all aspects of the strategic planning implementation process, fund raising, and program development and can execute this with solid financial and operational performance.

The optimal candidate will be a savvy and seasoned leader who shares a passion for workforce development. Using well-developed communication and consensus-building skills, the new Executive Director will lead efforts to position the organization internally and externally, with an entrepreneurial spirit, in the context of a small non-profit in the 21st Century – fast-paced, dynamic, innovative and responsive. Serving as the voice for WPTI, the ideal candidate will leverage WPTI’s expertise and reputation.

Performance, Success and Opportunities

During his/her first year, the Executive Director will address the following key areas for performance and success:
    Program Design
  • Maintain or grow the quantity and quality of training and customized projects delivered
  • Maintain and grow relationships with partner organizations
  • Develop trainings for providers who serve different populations then current targets
    Fundraising
  • Increase new foundation support and maintain current support
    Leadership
  • Increase staff capacity and development
  • Further develop Board roles and grow Board and respective committees
  • Maintain successful relationship with fiscal sponsor
    Technology
  • Upgrade technology
  • Launch new digital training efforts
  • Launch new technology to provide more customer friendly registration processes
    Strategic Plan
  • Complete and implement strategic plan that is tied to budgetary goals
    Communication
  • Develop and launch a marketing/branding plan
  • Develop strategy to better articulate success and impact
    Financial
  • Financial sustainability and long-term growth

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

    Skills and Experiential Knowledge
  • Five or more years of experience in a senior management position
  • Knowledge of operating in a small non-profit
  • Extensive knowledge of workforce development field
  • Developed and implemented a strategic plan
  • Successfully managed an organization through change
  • Led an organization through growth and expansion
  • Sound financial management, including development of new revenue sources
  • Developing and managing competent staff
  • Relationship building with related organizations, including networking and partnership development
  • Building consensus among diverse constituencies
  • Public speaking
  • Experience enhancing the visibility of the organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Understanding and belief in the importance of professional development and capacity building
  • A forward thinker with an interest in current issues affecting WFD and a commitment to diversity in all aspects of the organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Candidate will optimally possess a Master’s degree
